At least 14 people were killed in six traffic accidents in six districts in Bangladesh on Friday, a day before the Eid-ul-Azha to be observed in the country on Saturday.
Of the victims, five were in Sylhet, three each were in Gaibandha and Habiganj and one each in Bogura, Sirajganj and Sherpur, reports received from the districts said.
In Sylhet, five people were killed and another was critically injured as a bus crashed into a car on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Boraiya under Osmaninagar upazila at about 7:30am.
The deceased were Swapan Kumar Das, his wife Lovely Rani Das and their three children. They were going to their village home, said Osmaninagar police station’s sub-inspector Kamal Hossain.
The injured one was immediately rushed to Osmaninagar upazila health complex.
Kamal said that they came to know that the victims were from Moulvibazar.
In Gaibandha, three people were killed and six others were injured as a covered van loaded with tiles crashed into a car on Dhaka-Rangpur Highway at Nundah Bridge point in Gobindaganj upazila, reports United News of Bangladesh quoting Gaibandha Fire Service and Civil Defence deputy director Enamul Haque.
The deceased were Shahed Mia, 40, and Kajal Mia, 32, of Pirganj upazila and Shakil Islam, 56, of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur.
All the victims were from the covered van.
New Age correspondent in Sirajganj, quoting Hatiqumrul highway police station sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam, reported that Atiya Khatun, 28, of Puthia area in Rajshahi was killed and 10 others were injured as two trucks collided head-on at Chariya Kandipara under Ullapara upazila in the morning.
In Habiganj, Three people — Shahida Begum, 35, and Saleha Begum, 35, of Dashghar under Bishambharpur in Sunamganj and a 40-year-old car driver were killed and three others injured as a bus crashed into the car carrying them on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Kalibarighat area under Bahubal upazila at about 6:00am on Friday, said Bahubal police station officer-in-charge Md Quamruzzaman.
He said that the two female deceased were apparel workers in Gazipur and were going to their village home to celebrate the Eid-ul-Azha.
In Bogura, NGO employee, Shapla Khatun, 28, of village Malibari under Kahalu in Bogura was killed and her husband and minor daughter were injured as they were hit by a truck at Ranbagha under Nandigram at about 9:00am, Kundarhat highway police station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam said.
In Sherpur, pedestrian Rajib Mia, 30, was killed as he was run over by a covered van on Dhaka-Sherpur highway at Kurshabagoir under Nakla upazila at about 11:00am, Nakla police station officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain Shah said.
