Resumption of DPL under further doubt

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s focus on restarting international cricket and sending High Performance Unit for foreign tours casted a shadow of doubt over the 2020 edition of the Dhaka Premier League, which has remained postponed for over four months now.

Earlier, BCB officials had hinted that they were planning to resume DPL in September-October in a controlled environment to tackle the danger of coronavirus.

Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed had named Cox’s Bazar and BKSP in Savar as possible venues for the tournament.

But after the International Cricket Council deferred October’s Twenty20 World Cup for a year, BCB high ups expressed their eagerness to fill up that time by rescheduling a few of the series that were put off since April and by sending the HP team to Sri Lanka in the coming months.

Member secretary of CCDM Ali Hossain on Wednesday said that the committee will hold discussions after the Eid-ul-Azha break to find a date of resumption for DPL but doubted that the clubs will agree to restart the league in the absence of both the national and HP team players.

‘We are not sure when we can start the tournament. We will sit after Eid to take a decision about DPL,’ Ali said.

‘The HP and national team may go to Sri Lanka and if that is the case it will be very difficult [to resume the league],’ he added.

There were some speculations that the CCDM had asked all clubs to send them a list of 15 players as it was planning to divide the teams in two groups and hold the tournament in two separate venues.

But Ali outright refused to validate such claims, saying no such requests were made by the CCDM.

‘We haven’t sent any letter to the clubs neither we have asked them anything verbally,’ said Ali.

The postponement of the DPL has had an adverse affect on the financial state of the country’s first-class players, who depend heavily on the income from this List-A competition.

This year’s edition of the 12-team league got abruptly postponed right after the first round matches.
