The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday decided to file two separate cases against Public Works Department additional chief engineer Utpal Kumar Dey and his wife Gopa Dey on charges of accumulation of illegal wealth and money laundering.

In his inquiry, the commission assistant director Neyamul Hasan Gazi found that the couple amassed illegal wealth worth around Tk 8 crore, said ACC director for public relations Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

The commission initiated the inquiry against Utpal Kumar in September last year allegedly for his link with the government-listed top contractor and Juba League leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim, now in jail.

In September last year, Utpal Kumar was made officer on special duty in the wake of the crackdown on the ‘casino’ business in the capital and a bribery controversy in the department.

In October 2019, the ACC imposed a ban on foreign travel by a good number of PWD officials and engineers including Utpal Kumar as the commission’s primary inquiry found the officials accumulated illegal wealth and tried to leave country.

Earlier in the month, the commission filed a case against GK Shamim and his mother for their alleged involvement in accumulation of illegal wealth worth Tk 297 crore after Rapid Action Battalion detained GK Shamim in September.
