Awami League MP Israfil dies of pneumonia after contracting COVID-19

Ruling Awami League lawmaker for Naogaon-6 constituency M Israfil Alam died of pneumonia after contracting COVID19 at a hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning. He was 54.

Israfil’s wife Sultana Pervin said that the three-time member of parliament was undergoing treatment at Square Hospital with breathing difficulty where he breathed his last at about 6:20am.

Israfil was admitted to the hospital for the second time on July 17 as he started coughing up blood, she said.

Square Hospital chief of administration Yousuf Siddique told New Age that the MP had taken self-discharge from the hospital after he felt better.

Later, he admitted at the hospital again with lung infection though he was negative for COVID-19, said Siddique, adding that doctors identified pneumonia as the reason behind his death.

On July 6, Israfil was first admitted to the private hospital with acute breathing problem and he was found COVID-19 positive. But, after treatment for some days, he was tested negative.

He was released from hospital on July 14 as his follow-up test report came out negative, his wife said.

The MP was put on life support on Friday as his condition deteriorated.

Israfil became MP for the first time in 2008 when he was the general secretary of Sramik League of Dhaka city unit.

Besides, Israfil was the joint secretary of Naogaon district Awami League, president of the Rural Development and Cooperatives Federation, and member of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry of labour and employment.

He was buried at his family graveyard after namaz-e janaza in Naogaon.

President Md Abdul Hamid, prime minister Sheikh Hasina, speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader and ministers expressed their condolence at the death of Israfil Alam.

Earlier on June 13, AL MP for Sirajganj-1 and former health minister Mohammed Nasim died of COVID-19.

Including Israfil Alam, at least 16 AL MPs were tested positive for COVID-19.

The other infected 15 are Khandker Mosharraf Hossain MP for Faridpur-3, liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Huq MP for Gazipur-1, Mohammed Nasim MP for Sirajganj-1, Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs minister Bir Bahadur U Shwe Sing MP for Bandarban, Zaheed Farooque MP for Barishal-5, M Abdus Shahid MP for Maulvibazar-4, Moslem Uddin Ahmed MP for Chattogram-8, Shahiduzzaman Sarker MP for Naogaon-2, Mohammad Ebadul Karim MP for Brahmanbaria-5, Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury MP for Chattogram-16, Faridul Hoque Khan Dulal MP for Jamalpur-2, Enamul Haque MP for Rajshahi-4, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza MP for Narail-2, Mir Mushtaque Ahmed Rob for Satkhira-2, and reserved seat woman MP Ferdousi Islam.

On June 14, state minister for religious affairs Sheikh M Abdullah died of COVID-19 at the Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka.

Former AL MP for the Bogura-Jaipurhat reserved seat for women Kamrun Nahar Putul died on May 22, former AL MP for Dhaka’s Mohammadpur-Dhanmondi constituency Mockbul Hossain died at Dhaka CMH on May 25.

Apart from AL leaders, former state minister for finance and planning and Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s former MP Anwarul Kabir Talukder died at Dhaka CMH on June 14 and former Jatiya Party MP for Bogura-5 constituency Shahjahan Ali Talukder died at the hospital on June 28.
