LG bodies asked to dump animal wastes properly

The local government and rural development ministry on Monday ordered the local government bodies — city corporations, municipalities and Upazila Parishads — to ensure proper dumping of the carcasses of animals and birds below ground surface so that they did not pollute the environment.

The Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009 and Local Government (Municipality) Act 2009 made the local bodies responsible for the tasks, said a circular issued on Monday.

LGRD minister Md Tajul Islam told New Age that he heard that people indiscriminately throw carcasses of animals and birds into ponds, canals and other water bodies, risking the spread of germs of various diseases among the population.

‘Such unhealthy activities must be stopped by the local government bodies,’ he said.
