A couple was arrested in the capital’s Rupnagar area on charge of torturing their minor domestic help.
On information, police arrested the couple on Saturday morning on allegation of pouring boiling water on the minor girl.
The arrested were Sajjadul Bashar, employee of a local hospital, and his wife Shahnaj Begum.
Police rescued the minor and treated at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for her burn injuries. She was taken to police station to record complaint against the couple, said Rupnagar police inspector (operation) Mokammel Haque.
The 10-year old girl is from Noakhali and she had been working at the apartment for around three years and the couple tortured her many days over trifling matters.
There are torture marks on the girl’s body and she is traumatised by repeated torture incidents, said sub-inspector Asaduzzaman.
The girl told police that the couple had two children and her main duty was to take care of them. Besides, they were imposing other tasks on her and tortured her over trifling issues.
On Saturday morning, Shahnaj poured boiling water on the girl as she mistook while working. Hearing her screaming, neighbors rushed there and called police, said the SI.
Police arrested the couple and informed the girl’s parents living in Noakhali.
The girl will be handed over to her parents, police said.
