State minister for youth and sports Zahid Ahsan Russell on Thursday handed over a cheque worth Tk 10 lakh from prime minister Sheikh Hasina to struggling Taekwondo player Santwana Rani Ray.

‘I am very happy and grateful that the prime minister stands by me in the time of my need after knowing my family problems back in March through media reports. I sincerely thankful to prime minister and Russell sir,’ said Santwana after receiving the cheque from Russell at his secretariat.

Santwana, who has been competing in both domestic and international Taekwondo competitions since 2005, has won multiple medals, which included a bronze medal in Taekwondo World Championship in 2017 and five gold medals in national competitions.

The 37-year old athlete from Lalmonirhat was working as a house tutor, part-time tutor in coaching centres, daily wage worker in farms and even as a house help to earn bread for her six-member family.

Santwana was unmarried and living with her parents Subhash Chandra

and Jamuna Rani and her siblings.

She completed honours in history from Rangpur Government College in 2008 and masters from Rajshahi Government College in 2009. She also achieved LLB degree from Rangpur Law College in 2013.
