The first death anniversary of former military dictator and Jatiya Party chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad will be observed today.
He died on July 14, 2019 at the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital at the age of 89.
JP as well as Ershad Trust has chalked out different programmes to mark the day maintaining health safety guidelines, a press release issued by the party said.
JP chairman GM Quader, along with party leaders, will offer prayers at the grave of Ershad in Rangpur and later join separate programmes at the party’s central office in the capital’s Kakrail and JP chairman’s office at Banani.
A meeting remembering the late JP chairman and a prayer session will be held at President Park where Ershad lived in Dhaka.
General Ershad seized power from the elected president justice Abdus Sattar of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party as the Chief Martial Law Administrator on March 24, 1982, and ruled the country in this capacity until December 11, 1983.
Ershad on that day declared himself president of the country by removing president justice AFM Ahsanuddin Chowdhury whom he had appointed to the top position of the state.
The military dictator was ousted from power in the face of a mass upsurge on December 6, 1990.
