Holy Cross Archbishop Moses M Costa of Chittagong Archdiocese died of heart attack at Square Hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning.
He was 69.
Father Kamal Corraya, director of St John Vianney Hospital in capital’s Tejgaon, told New Age that Moses came to Dhaka on June 13 and was admitted to Square Hospital with high fever and later tested positive for COVID-19.
The archbishop died of a sudden heart attack on Monday at about 9:20am after recovering from the viral disease.
Moses M Costa, who had been the archbishop of Chattogram since 2011, hailed from Tumilia of Gazipur.
Father Leonard Rebeiro, Vicar Gen of Chattogram, said that Moses M Costa’s body was kept in Tejgaon for people to pay tributes, and then it was taken to his village in Gazipur around 3:30pm.
The deceased will be taken to Chattogram and kept in Patharghata Catholic Church from 7:00am to 2:00pm on Tuesday for people to pay their final respects.
The Vicar Gen of Chattogram said that the burial will be held in the church premises around 3:30pm today.
Archbishop Costa was the secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh and chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Healthcare Commission.
Archbishop Costa was appointed bishop of Chattogram in 2011 and became an archbishop when Pope Francis elevated Chattogram, known as the cradle of Catholicism in Bangladesh, to an archdiocese in 2017.
He served as bishop of Dinajpur from 1996 to 2011.
