Hill organisations condemn killing of woman during ‘shootout’

Four Chattogram Hill Tracts-based organisations on Sunday condemned Friday’s ‘shootout’ that killed a woman and injured her minor son at Shamukjhiri area under Boangchhari in Bandarban.

Shantilata Tanchyanga, 30, was killed and his 4-year-old son Arjun Tanchangya was injured during a ‘shootout’ between the security forces and suspected miscreants on Friday evening, New Age correspondent in Khagrachhari, quoting Boangchhari police, reported.

The joint statement issued by United Workers’ Democratic Front president Sachib Chakma, Ganotantrik Juba Forum president Angya Marma, Hill Women’s Federation president Nirupa Chakma and Pahari Chhatra Parishad president Bipul Chakma alleged that the woman was actually killed and her son was injured in security force’s firing at Shamukjhiri area while she was returning home after jum cultivation.

They termed the incident as a murder and clear violation of human rights in the hills and demanded exemplary punishment for those involved in the killing.
