Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alam on Sunday said that health minister Zahid Maleque should resign from his post immediately over COVID-19 test scam.

‘It is a matter of shame and sorrow that the ruling Awami League leaders and members are involved in corruption regarding COVID-19 tests even during ongoing coronavirus crisis,’ he said while inaugurating pro-BNP organisation Ziaur Rahman Foundation’s hotline for treatment of COVID-19 patients virtually.

The BNP leader made the comments in connection with falsifying COVID-19 test reports by Regent Hospital and JKG Health Care without testing samples. The fraudulent activities have been unearthed by the Rapid Action Battalion recently.

Regent Hospital owner Md Shahed used to introduce himself as a member of AL’s foreign affairs sub-committee.

Referring to the Directorate General of Health Services’ Saturday’s statement that an agreement between the DGHS and Regent Hospital was signed as per the direction of the high ups of health ministry, the BNP leader said that a conflict between the health minister and the DGHS had begun over the agreement.

‘Health directorate is saying that it would not allow Regent Hospital to test COVID-19 if they were not asked by the ministry. The ministry directed DGHS to allow Regent Hospital to test COVID-19. So, who is the responsible? The health minister should resign immediately,’ he said.

He alleged that the health sector had collapsed and looting had been continuing in the sector.

Fakhrul alleged that as the ruling Awami League was not elected by people and it always fostered corruption, its leaders had started massive plundering and siphoning public funds following the outbreak of coronavirus without caring about the people.

Mentioning that the British and the Pakistanis had earlier looted assets of Bangladesh and took them to their countries, he alleged that the AL leaders now were looting people’s money and laundering it to foreign countries.

He urged the party leaders and activists as well as countrymen to be united to resist the government’s misdeeds.

Presided over by ZRF executive director Farhad Haleem Donar, the program was also addressed by BNP senior joint-secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as the special guest.
