Workers of JK Fashion Limited of Medlar group on Saturday staged a demonstration blocking a road in Shewrapara area in the capital demanding wages of June and July.
The workers also demanded Eid bonus, wages of the next few months as the authorities suddenly decided to move the factory from Shewrapa to Tongi.
They also demanded payment of working on holidays since last year alongside gratuities within July 15.
Assistant police commissioner of Mirpur zone MM Moinul Islam said that the workers blocked the road causing traffic to come to a halt.
Police went to the spot and after talking to them they managed to convince the workers to clear the road for transport movement.
According to the factory workers, the garment authority decided to shift the factory from Shewrapara to Tongi.
Most of the workers, however, were unwilling to join the Tongi factory and wanted their due salaries and Eid bonus cleared.
‘Before shifting the factory, the owner must pay dues to the workers. The factory authority earlier said that all dues will be cleared within Wednesday. However, we did not receive any payment yet. That is why we have blocked the road,’ said a worker.
Around 1,000 have been working in the factory. They made shirts, pants, and other items that are exported to China and some European countries.
A worker said that they worked at the factory for the last 15 years and added, ‘The owner of the factory has decided to shift. They told us to join at Tongi factory. But I cannot go there because my family members live in Mirpur. They are working here.’
He said, before shifting the factory I want the authority to clear all dues. ‘Unless they make the payments, we will not allow the factory to shift. Most of the workers are finding survival hard as they did not receive their salaries in the last two months,’ he added.
Earlier on July 1, JK Fashion Ltd issued a notification regarding change of location of its factory unit-1 to Tongi from Begum Rokeya Sharani, Mirpur, effective from August 8 this year.
