One killed, 50 injured in Kushtia as villagers clash

At least one person was killed and 50 others sustained injuries, including six police personnel, in a clash between two groups of villagers over establishing supremacy in Sandiyara Bazar area in Kushtia on Monday.

Deceased Billal Hossain, 44, son of Mofazzal Hossain, was hit by a rubber bullet fired by the police to foil the clash.

Kushtia additional superintendent of police M Mostafizur Rahman said that there had been a longstanding dispute between Panti Union Awami League general secretary Samiur Rahman and businessman Mamun over establishing supremacy in the area.

Following the dispute, the supporters of the two groups locked into an altercation. At one stage they swooped on each other with sharp weapons, leaving at least 50 people of both the sides injured.

On information, the police went to the spot and fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, leaving Billal injured, Mostafiz said.

The injured, including Billal, were taken to Kumarkhali Upazila Health Complex where on duty doctors declared Billal dead.

Additional police have been deployed to avert untoward situation, he added.
