SC stays bail of contractor over pillow scam

The Appellate Division on Wednesday stayed for 16 weeks the High Court’s order that had granted bail to Asif Hossain, managing director of Mazidsons Construction Limited.

Asif is facing two corruption cases relating to misappropriation of over 15 crore by showing abnormally high prices of household articles purchased to furnish apartments in multi-storey buildings under the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project in Pabna.

Chamber judge Md Nuruzzaman stayed Asif’s bail after hearing online an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The High Court granted bail to Asif on June 29 till reopening of the court on condition that he would surrender his passport and would not leave country.

According to the cases ACC filed on December 12, 2019, Mazidsons Construction Limited supplied household articles to the public works department. The PWD purchased the household articles, including electric stove, electric kettle, room cleaners, television sets, refrigerators, pillows and washing machines, for furnishing 966 apartments constructed mainly for the Russian engineers and officials of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project.

Each of the pillows was reportedly purchased at Tk 5,957 and carried to the apartments at a cost of Tk 760.

An electric stove reportedly cost Tk 7,747 and its lifting cost to the upstairs was Tk 6,650.

Former attorney general Fida M Kamal appeared for the Asif and Khurshid Alam Khan for the ACC.
