Shamsuzzaman Khan becomes Bangla Academy president

Renowned folklorist Shamsuzzaman Khan has been named the new Bangla Academy president for the next three years. He assumed office through a programme on Monday, says a press release.

Shamsuzzaman Khan has previously served as director general of Bangla Academy, Bangladesh National Museum and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. 

Bangla Academy director general Habibullah Siraji gave the welcome speech at the programme held at the Munier Choudhury Conference Room of the academy.

Bangla Academy’s acting secretary Aparesh Kumar Banerjee, directors and officials of the academy were present at the programme.

The event commenced with observance of one minute silence in remembrance of the late president of the academy national professor Anisuzzaman, who died of COVID-19 at the Combined Military Hospital on May 14.

‘We are glad to get Shamsuzzaman Khan as the president of the academy. We have gathered here today to welcome him,’ said Habibullah Siraji.

Shamsuzzaman Khan said, ‘Bangla Academy is my favourite organisation. We will make the organisation a symbol of intellect and culture through our combined and tireless efforts.’

Shamsuzzaman Khan was born on December 29, 1940 at Charigram in Manikganj district. He completed his masters from Dhaka University in 1963.

He started his career as a teacher. He worked as professor at Haraganga College in Munshiganj, Jagannath College in Dhaka, Mymensingh Agricultural University and National University.

He has penned and edited more than 100 books till date. His works include Folklore Charcha, Bangabandhur Rashtrachinta O Bartaman Bangladesh, Bangabandhur Sangey Alap O Anyanya Prasanga, Muktabuddhi, Dharmanirapekshata O Samakal, Bangarashtrer Galpasamagra, Kishore Rachanasamagra, Bangladesher Utsab and others.

He received Bangla Academy Award in 2001, Ekushey Padak in 2009 and Independence Award in 2017.
