An activist of United People’s Democratic Front, a Chattogram Hill Tractsbased political organisation, was shot and killed near his house at Hajachara at Dighinala in Khagrachari on Sunday morning.

The victim is Dharmajay Tripura, a man in his thirties and son of Shashi Charan Tripura.

The murder was reported two days after the International Chattogram Hill Tracts Commission urged the authorities to take initiatives to protect the ethnic minorities.

Locals said that a group of unidentified assailants attacked Dharmajay at about 8:00am.

The assailants fled the scene, leaving him spot dead.

Dighinala police station officer-in-charge Uttam Chandra Deb said that they had sent the body to Khagrachari Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

No case was lodged until evening and none was arrested so far in this connection, he said.

UPDF Khagrachari district branch organiser Ani Chakma in a statement condemned the killing and said that Dharmajay left Janasanghati Samity (reform) and joined UPDF two years ago.

The statement sent to media by Niron Chakma of UPDF’s publication and publicity department demanded immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment for the killers and stop of violation of human rights and extrajudicial killings in CHT.
