Popular actor and member of Aranyak Natyadal Fazlur Rahman Babu and playwright Masum Reza urged playwrights to develop original works at an online programme titled ‘Theatre Kathan Adda 40’ on Monday night.

The programme was organised by Theatre Kathan, which has been arranging online discussions on local theatre arena twice a week amid the COVID-19 outbreak to entertain theatre lovers, on its Facebook page.

Fazlur Rahman Babu said, ‘It has become among playwrights a trend to develop a play copying acclaimed works by others. Our theatre arena won’t move forward until playwrights start penning original and authentic works. I played the character of a boatman in the play named ‘Iti Katha’ and afterwards I received 49 offers for playing similar characters. I turned down everyone because playing same roles in different plays make no sense to me.’

Masum Reza mentioned, ‘Aspiring actors should learn from their mistakes and playwrights should strive to pen new and original works.’

He also spoke on his upcoming venture.

‘These days I am working on an upcoming play named “Pendulum”, a joint production of Dhaka Theatre and Desh Natok, which will be directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff. We have been doing online rehearsals for the play amid the COVID-19 outbreak. It has been a great experience for me,’ added Reza.

The online programme, the 40th episode of ‘Theatre Kathan Adda’, was anchored by Samiun Jahan Dola.
