COVID-19 claims 37, infects 3,462 in 24 hours in Bangladesh

Bangladesh recorded 37 more death from COVID-19 and 3,462 new patients in the past 24 hours till 8:00am Wednesday as the death and detection kept rising in the country.

The new figures took to 1,582 the death toll from the novel coronavirus and 1,22,660 the number of detected patients  in the country, Directorate General of Health Services additional director general Nasima Sultana said in the daily online bulletin.

Bangladesh registered the first COVID-19 patients on March 8 and the first death on March 18.

The country is now on the 16th week of infections and has passed 109th day.

The infection and death increased manifold in recent weeks.

In the past four days of the ongoing 16th week, 13,885 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus and 157 patients died.

In the 15th week, 24,396 people tested positive for coronavirus and 286 died of COVID-19.

In the 14th week, 21,353 people tested positive and 293 people died.

Earlier, 18,418 people tested positive and 236 died in the 13th week, 12,530 tested positive and 158 died in the 12th week, 11,083 tested positive and 138 died in the 11th week and 7,225 tested positive and 100 died in the 10th week.

The infection and death started increasing from the 10th week after the government eased the lockdown by opening markets, shopping malls and factories.

The number of detection was 4,980 with 29 death in the 9th week and 3,792 with 35 death in the 8th week.

The government is now experimenting on area-wise lockdown to curb the rate of infection.

Nasima said that of the new 37 deceased, 28 were males and nine were females.

Of them, 1 was in 11–20, 2 in 21–30, 2 in 31–40, 3 in 41–50 years, 12 in 51–60, 9 in 61–70 and 8 in 71–80 age groups. On Wednesday, 13,158 suspected patients were in isolation.

Besides, 2,031 more patients were declared recovered from the infection in the past 24 hours as they showed no more symptoms of COVID-19. So far 49,666 COVID-19 patients were declared recovered.
