Rift in Jatiya Party surfaces again over attack on the party founder HM Ershad’s son Rahgir Al-Mahe Ershad, also known as Shad Ershad, at his Rangpur house ‘Pallinibash’ on June 2.

JP secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga at a press release on Sunday said that some people for their political gains were trying to make a settled matter as an issue while Shad Ershad told New Age that it was unfortunate and surprising seeing such an statement from Ranga.

Ranga’s release stated of taking organisational actions against those who would further try to linger with the matter and would try to malign his or the party chairman’s images by alleging them behind the attack.

His release stated that some people, who were released from the central committee recently, holding a meeting in front of the party’s Kakrail office on Saturday narrated fabricated stories stating that Rangpur ward 27 unit JP secretary Tipu Sultan attacked Shad Ershad, also member of parliament for Rangpur-3 constituency.

Tipu was rather physically assaulted, was confined at a room of Pallinibash and was handed over to the police on a false charge of attacking the MP.

The incident made the local JP leaders furious, reads the release adding that Ranga, being instructed by the party chairman GM Quader, ordered the Rangpur city mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa to settle it instantly.

‘We would not have remained silent if Ershad’s son and daughter-in-law had really been attacked at Ershad’s house,’ Ranga told New Age.

Shad Ershad said that it was unfortunate that the party secretary general did not believe him rather believed narratives of some derailed leaders of Rangpur.

‘Some notorious people created terror at my ancestral house on the day. But, I did not file any criminal charge rather lodged a general diary,’ Shad told New Age.

JP presidium member Shafiqul Islam Sentu, who presided over the Saturday’s meeting at the party’s Kakrail office, said that their protest would continue unless Tipu was punished.

‘Let’s see what Ranga can do,’ Sentu said.

A rift between Rawshan Ershad and GM Quader surfaced last year on the question of leadership and both of them declared separate committees even after the last council session held in December, 2019.
