Jatiya Party leaders held a rally on Saturday demanding punishment of the party’s derailed activists who attacked JP founder HM Ershad’s son Rahgir Al-Mahe Ershad, at his Rangpur house ‘Pallinibash’ on May 24.
At the rally, held at the party’s central office in Kakrail, JP leaders demanded that JP chairman GM Quader and secretary general Mashiur Rahman take immediate action against the derailed activists.
Otherwise, they said, they would consider that both the chairman and secretary general were behind the attack.
Ershad’s son, better known as Shad Ershad, was not present at the programme.
Claiming the attack on Shad and his wife was tantamount to attack on the late president and the party, JP presidium member Shafiqul Islam Sentu said, ‘We cannot let it go unpunished.’
Sentu also questioned the roles of the JP chairman and secretary general. ‘Seeing their inaction, we doubt whether they are behind the attack,’ Sentu said.
JP leader Khaled Akhter termed the incident as a part of conspiracy within the party.
Mamunur Rashid, Iqbal Hossain Raju, Ziaul Haque Mridha, Fakhruzzaman Jahangir, among others were also present at the meeting.
On May 24, Rangpur ward 27 unit JP secretary Tipu Sultan and his followers attacked on Shad Ershad, also lawmaker of Rangpur 3 constituency.
Following the attack, Shad filed a general diary with the local police station. Police released Tipu Sultan after intervention of the Rangpur mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, JP activists said.
JP secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga termed the incident as ‘misunderstanding’. ‘We will solve it soon,’ he said.
