I wish, I were a refugee

一 Jubair Ahmed Arnob

I wish, I were a refugee,
a Rohingya refugee:
thousands would take care of my need;
there would have been NGOs
to look after all of my greed;
no one would have eaten
my share of food;
I wouldn’t have to roam
around begging for
goods that belong to me.

I wish, I were a refugee,
a Syrian refugee,
dead,
with no hope
that one would come to
save me.

I wish, I were a refugee,
a Syrian refugee,
buried
beneath the structure
I built.

I wish, I were a refugee,
a Syrian refugee,
I wouldn’t have to wait,
no more, for food.
but I am glad-
that I fed myself to the worms-
those are in need.

I wish, I were a refugee,
a Syrian refugee,
dead and buried-
out of your reach.
