The liberation war affairs ministry on Tuesday published a gazette announcing names of 1,256 people as freedom fighters.
They had been recommended by the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council following the nationwide screening, the liberation war affairs minister Mozammel Huq said.
The screening process began in 2017 after receiving over 1.5 lakh fresh applications, Muktijoddha Council officials said.
Currently, over two lakh freedom fighters get government benefits, the ministry officials said.
The making of the freedom fighters’ list, however, had been hindered for the coronavirus pandemic, Mozammel said.
