A stenographer of Bangladesh police died of COVID-19 on Tuesday taking the total number of deaths in the force to 16 since April 28 while 5,333 policemen so far tested positive with the novel virus.
The police headquarters named the stenographer, Nirod Chandra Mondal, 52, and added that he was posted in the Pallabi zone at Mirpur crime division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
With his death, the police lost 16 of their members since April 28, the day the first death occurred.
Of the infected policemen, 2,059 recovered so far.
Among the total infection, 1,706 were infected in the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters alone, the officials said.
Bangladesh has so far reported more than 52,445 coronavirus cases and 709 deaths. The country on Tuesday recorded 2,911 new cases, the highest in the span of 24 hours.
