Two men were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with law enforcement agencies in Gazipur and Bandarban on Monday.

The Gazipur victim was Nurul Haque, 25, a resident of village Rajpalon under Ukhia upazila in Cox’s Bazar district while the Bandarban victim was a Rohingya youth, 25, living in Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar.

A press release issued by the Border Guard Bangladesh said that a team of the Cox’s Bazar BGB battalion was patrolling the Tin Rastar Mor area of Ghumdhum union of Naikhyangchhari upazila in Bandarban early Monday.

A group of suspected people coming from Myanmar opened fire on the BGB personnel triggering a gun fight at about 5:30am, the release said.

Later, a Rohingya man was found injured on the spot and taken to Ukhiya Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

New Age correspondent in Gazipur, quoting Rapid Action Battalion-1 crimes prevention company commander Md Kamruzzaman, reported that Nurul was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with RAB members in Tetulbari area under Kashimpur in Gazipur at about 3:00am on Monday.

The RAB official said that they seized 1.7 lakh Yaba tablets and a firearm from the spot.

Over 500 people were killed in ‘gunfights’ with law enforcement agencies during ongoing anti-drug drive since May 2018.
