Gono Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain on Monday urged the prime minister to take coordinated national initiatives to tackle the COVID-19 situation.
Dr Kamal, also top leader of Jatiya Oikya Front, made the appeal in a statement sent to media by Gono Forum spokesperson Subrata Chowdhury.
He said that a good number of people had to sacrifice their lives due to slow process in taking decision to tackle the situation as well as lack of coordination in implementing the decisions.
He said that about 50,000 people are now infected and all the people of the country are scared of this unknown disease as experts were fearing that the number of infections was spiralling and the situation would turn worse.
‘It is possible to overcome economic downturn gradually but saving people’s lives is now an urgent necessity,’ he said.
People’s lives and livelihoods were thrown to a dreadful situation by not making lockdown effective, relaxing enforcement of law, irresponsible remarks of ministers concerned, allowing labourers and common people to leave Dhaka and then returning to Dhaka again, killing time in taking decision, lack of coordination in implementing decisions, and mismanagement and chaos in health sector, he observed.
He said that the offices and public transports were reopened when COVID-19 infections and deaths were increasing and experts were fearing that its outcome would be dreadful.
‘As a result, I urge the prime minister to take coordinated national initiatives involving all the political parties and experts in related fields,’ he said.
