‘Drug peddler’ killed in Jashore ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the Rapid Action Battalion in a field at Rampur of Moniramur upazila in Jashore early Sunday.

The victim, Rubel Hossain Shaon, 22, resident of Buinkara area of Nawapara Municipality, was wanted in at least three cases filed with the Abhaynagar police in Jashore,

He was known as GM to his accomplices and was absconding for long, Abhaynagar police officer-in-charge Tajul Islam told New Age.

The OC said that Rubel’s name was in the list of the suspected drug peddlers prepared by the police.

RAB-6 commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Rowshanul Firoj said that a RAB team went to the spot as a part of its anti-drug drive and was attacked by the miscreants, which triggered the gunfight at about 3:30pm.

He claimed that the RAB rescued Shaon with bullet injuries and took him to Monirampur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, the RAB CO said.

He said that they seized a gun, a bullet and 64 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.

Monirampur Upazila Health Complex resident medical officer Anup Basu said that the youth was brought dead to the hospital.
