Sylhet mayor in quarantine, ex-mayor’s wife affected

Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury and its top officials, including chief executive officer Bidhayak Roy Chowdhury, have been in home quarantine from Sunday after mayor’s private secretary tested coronavirus positive.

SCC former mayor Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran’s wife Asma Kamran, also general secretary of the city unit of ruling Awami League, also has been under treatment at home from Wednesday night as she tested positive for COVID-19.

SCC chief health officer Zahidul Islam told New Age on Thursday afternoon that the mayor went in quarantine at his Kumarpara residence in the city early Sunday immediately after he came to know that his PS Muhibul Islam Emon was infected with coronavirus.

‘Samples of 10 officials of the city corporation were sent for COVID tests and only Emon has been found affected,’ Zahidul said, adding that almost all of the SCC officials were working now staying at home.

Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital deputy director Himanshu Lal Roy told New Age that Asma Kamran has been kept in quarantine at her Chharar Par residence in the city on Wednesday night after she tested positive of COVID-19.

Besides, SCC councillor Azadur Rahman Azad was admitted to Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmad Hospital on Thursday noon with respiratory problem, said the hospital’s residential medical officer Sushanta Kumar Mahapatra.

‘Azad had been in home quarantine since May 23 after he tested positive for coronavirus,’ he said.
