At least three people — two workers and a minor, died and 30 went missing after an engine-boat capsized in the River Jamuna due to stormy weather at Chauhali upazila in Sirajganj on Tuesday.

Two of the victims were identified as Pashan Ali, 65, a farm labourer of Belkuchi upazila, Sirajganj and Sheikh Kamal, 40, a welder of Nagarpur in Tangail while the identity of the minor could not ascertained immediately, according to local administration.

Chauhali upazila nirbahi officer Dewan Moudud Ahmed confirmed the deaths of three in the boat capsize incident.

He said at least 30 including parents of the minor were still missing. The local police and fire service were operating drives to rescue the missing victims, he said.

Chauhali police officer-in-charge Rashedul Islam Biswas said that the boat started from Enayetpur ghat with around 80-90 passengers at around 11:00am and capsized in the afternoon on its way to Chauhali. Around 35-40 passengers were rescued, he added.

Some engine boats were operating between Chauhali and Tangail and on other routes to transport passengers violating ban on movement of such public transport, local people said.

Enayetpur police OC Molla Masud said these boats were operating dodging their eyes. ‘We are trying our best to make people aware not to move during the shutdown in the wake of coronavirus pandemic,’ he added.
