Journalists staged a demonstration at SAARC Fountain at Karwanbazaar in Dhaka on Monday demanding due wage and festival allowances at different media outlets and protesting against sacking journalists from jobs during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Dhaka Union of Journalists arranged the protests in the afternoon of the Eid day.
Addressing the programme, union leaders thanked the authorities of the media outlets that paid wages and allowances to their employees and warned that tough actions would be taken against those who did not pay their employees’ wage and festival allowance.
They said that the union would accept neither firing journalists from their jobs nor non-payment of wage and allowance on any excuse during this catastrophic situation.
They urged the management of the media outlets to reinstate the sacked journalists.
Presiding over the programme, DUJ faction president Quddus Afrad said that the managements of a number of media outlets were sacking journalists and not paying their dues on varying excuses while people extended their helping hand to others during the coronavirus world pandemic.
‘It is injustice and tantamount to violating human rights,’ he said and warned for tough agitation programmes.
Referring to the dismissal of six journalists of an online news portal on the very day of Eid, he said that this situation must not continue.
DUJ faction general secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Topu, organising secretary A Jihadur Rahman, joint secretary Khairul Alam and former Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists joint secretary general Amiya Ghatok Pulok, among others, also spoke.
