Amphan-affected Khulna villagers offer Eid prayer in water

About 5,000, who are volunteering to repair Kapotakshmi River embankment damaged by cyclone Amphan on May 22, offered Eid prayers on the submerged embankment at Kayra village under Kayra upazila in Khulna Monday morning.

Kayra upazila chairman SM Shafiqul Islam, one of the participants in the Eid jamaat, said that about 5,000 people of nearby villages gathered on the spot in the morning to repair the damaged embankment.

At about 11:00am, the villagers offered Eid prayers in two Jamaats on the submerged embankment, he said.

He said that former upazila chairman AKM Tamij Uddin conducted one of the jamaats and the other was conducted by Kayra Sadar union parishad chairman Md Humayun Kabir.

The upazila chairman said that Amphan damaged embankments at a total of 24 points and most of the areas of four unions of his upazila were still under saline water.
