The jail authorities have started the process of releasing 17 ‘minor offenders’ as the government on Thursday reduced their sentences on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
‘11 of them were released from different jails on Friday and the others were on process to be released,’ an official of the directorate of prisons told New Age on Saturday.
Additional home secretary Syed Belal Hossain said that district committees, headed by district magistrates recommended releasing 25 prisoners and the government selected 17 of them after scrutinising their files.
A home ministry notification issued on Thursday said that the government under Section 401(1) of the Code of the Criminal Procedure decided to release 17 prisoners jailed for petty crimes but served out half of their prisoner terms.
‘Entitled prisoners have to pay the fine to enjoy the opportunity,’ said the notification.
The privileged prisoners include six in Cumilla, three in Khulna, two in Lalmonirhat, two in Gaibandha, and one each in Jashore, Kushtia, Tangail and Mymensingh.
Jessore Central Jail superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala said that his jail released Md Yusuf Ali, 47, who had served two months and three days out of his three months sentence in a case filed under the family ordinance.
