A former additional secretary died of COVID-19 while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday.
The former bureaucrat, Tawfiq Alam, was on his post retirement leave from February. He was 59.
Tawfiq belonged to the Bangladesh Civil Service batch of 1986 and his last posting was at the information commission as its secretary.
He was tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment at the dedicated coronavirus unit of DMCH for last 10 days, said the hospital’s assistant director Alauddin Al Azad.
He will be buried at Azimpur graveyard maintaining COVID-19 burial protocol.
Information minister Hasan Mahmud, state minister for Information Murad Hassan and Chief Information Commissioner Martuza Ahmed expressed their profound shock and sorrow at the death of former additional secretary Tawfiq Alam.
Tawfiq left behind his wife, a son and a daughter to mourn his death.
Earlier, Gautam Aich Sarker, additional secretary to the food ministry, died of COVID-19 while being treated at the Kurmitola General Hospital on May 9.
Jalal Saifur Rahman, a BCS administration cadre officer, who was on deputation to Anti-Corruption Commissioner as a director, died from coronavirus infection in the first week of April.
