Unidentified miscreants torched the music room of Baul Ranesh Thakur, a disciple of Baul Shah Abdul Karim, at village Ujandhal under Derai upazila in Sunamganj early Monday.

Derai Police Station officer-in-charge KM Nazrul Islam said that the fire occurred at the room adjacent to Ranesh's house at the village at about 1:30am on Monday and they visited the spot on the day but could not determine how the fire occurred.

He said that Ranesh came to the police station Tuesday night and was writing his complaint until 10:15pm to lodge a case with the police station.

The Baul woke up after hearing shouts of his neighbours when the fire occurred only to see the room burn into ashes, police officials said.

Udichi Shilpi Goshthi, in a statement on Tuesday, condemned the act and protested against torching of the Baul’s music room.

It said that different musical instruments and books the Baul gathered for the past 40 years and his research works on music were gutted in the fire.
