Juba League activist killed in ‘gunfight’

A Jaba League activist was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Balurght area of Boalkhali upazila in Chattogram on Sunday hours after he had been arrested over the murder of a local Juba League leader.

The activist is Mohammad Shawkat, a man in his forties and son of Hachi Mia of Charandwip union of Boalkhali.

Boalkhali Police Station officer-in-charge Adbul Karim said that they arrested Shawkat and Jashim hours after the murder of local Juba League leader Mohammad Naser, in his thirties, at Charandwip area of Boalkhali on Saturday.

Two factions of the organisation got into a deadly clash over the Zakat distribution, said Abdul Karim.

Two cases were filed against several people, including Shawkat and Jasim, for their alleged involvement in the murder and using illegal firearms, said the officer.

OC Karim said when they took out Shawkat for illegal firearms at Balurghat area, Shawkat’s accomplices opened fire at police who also retaliated by firing at about 2:00am.

When the attackers withdrew, he said, they found Shawkat shot and wounded and took him to Boalkhali Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Police seized a gun and one knife from the spot.

Later, he said, they conducted a raid on the area and arrested Md Nasir for his suspected involvement in murdering Naser.
