Garment workers leaders on Friday demanded payment of Eid festival allowance and all salary arrears by May 20.
They also demanded reinstatement of sacked workers and health safety of all the workers during the COVID-19 pandemic that infected over 20,000 and killed 298 till Friday in Bangladesh, including a number of RMG workers.
Garment Workers Trade Union Centre held a rally in front of the National Press Club to press home the demands.
GWTUC president Montu Ghosh said that the factory owners expanded their business over the years at the cost of workers’ labour, but were again trying to take coronavirus as another opportunity for profiteering.
‘Factory owners cheating workers taking novel coronavirus as an excuse,’ he said.
Among others, GWTUC executive president Kazi Ruhul Amin, general secretary Jolly Talukder and organising secretary KM Mintu spoke.
Garments Shramik Karmochari Oikyo Parishad urged the factory owners to pay workers arrears by May 20 along with their festival allowance.
The parishad coordinators Abdul Wahed and Kamrul Hasan, in a joint statement, condemned owners’ intention of cutting workers’ wage and allowances during the coronavirus crisis when the workers were passing hard time.
They also demanded proper treatment of the COVID-infected workers and compensation for the dead workers.
