The cleaners of the city corporations and municipalities have demanded their inclusion on the list of the employees eligible for getting compensations in case of being affected by the COVID-19.

Dhaka South City Corporation Scavengers and Workers Union general secretary M Abdul Latif and Dhaka North City Corporation Scavengers and Workers Union general secretary Ismail Hossain on Wednesday said that they jointly demanded inclusion of the city corporation cleaners on the compensation list in separate letters to the prime minister Sheikh Hasina, local government and rural development ministry and mayors of the corporations.

‘If the army, police and civil administration get compensations, why won’t the cleaners of the corporation get it? We are also risking our lives to keep the cities cleaned,’ Latif said claiming that DSCC mayor’s waste management adviser Khandaker Millatul Islam died on April 23 being infected by the virus.

‘We are also in risk. So, the 5300 cleaners of DSCC, 2500 cleaners of the DNCC and cleaners of other corporations and municipalities also should get the compensation,’ he added.

LGRD minister Md Tajul Islam on Wednesday said that he did not get any application from the cleaners. ‘We are not thinking about the issue as all the people in the country are at risk,’ he said.

On April 23, the finance division fixed compensation between Tk five lakh and Tk 10 lakh for the infected by the coronavirus and compensation between Tk 25 lakh and Tk 50 lakh for any fatality of the doctors, nurses, health workers, army, police and civil administration members who were doing duties risking their lives.
