University student killed by ‘rival’ in Jhenaidah

A university student was killed allegedly by his rival in Sheikhpara area of Shailakupa upazila in Jhenaidah early Wednesday.
The deceased was Arafat Rahman, 23, son of Jahangir alias Bidyut, a second-year student of English department of Kushtia Rabindra Moitree University.
Quoting locals, Shailakupa police station officer-in-charge Bazlur Rahman said that Arafat and his family used to live in a house built on a piece of land that his father bought from Rustom Ali.
Jahangir and Rustom’s brother Golam Joardar locked in an altercation over the land on Tuesday night. Following the altercation, Golam Joardar’s son Ujjal Joardar and four others swooped on Jahangir and his son Arafat with sharp weapon. Ujjal, at one stage, hit on Arafat’s head with a stick, leaving him critically injured.
Later, local people rescued Arafat and took him to Kushtia Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctor refereed him to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. Arafat died there while undergoing treatment.
Additional police had been deployed in the area to avert untoward situation, OC Bazlur said.
A case was filed with the police station in this regard, he added.
