Police allegedly abused and physically assaulted a journalist in Thakurgaon on Tuesday night.
Witnesses said police beat Abdul Latif Litu, the district correspondent of daily Bangladesh Protidin and of TV channel News24, at Duramari area near Thakurgaon municipality.
Abdul Latif Litu said that police beat him without any provocation when he was returning home after finishing his professional duty at about 10:00pm on Tuesday.
He got minor injury on his right hand and neck.
After taking preliminary treatment at Thakurgaon general hospital he returned to home at 11:30pm, he added.
Tanvirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Sadar police station, said that the incident was very unfortunate and it was a misunderstanding.
‘We are taking initiative according to our law.’
KM Kamrujjaman Selim, deputy commissioner of Thakurgaon, said what was happened with a journalist was very unacceptable and inhuman.
‘We will sit with the news body and taking action accordingly.
Odhikar, a Dhaka‑based human rights watchdog, strongly condemned the incident and said that it was unacceptable, in a press note signed by its Thakurgaon chapter focal person Nur Aftabul Alam Rupom.
‘I strongly condemn these kinds of attacks on journalists and urge the authorities to initiate an investigation into the incident and brought the perpetrators under the law,’ said Lutfor Rahman Mithu, general secretary of Thakurgaon Press Club.
Later Thakurgaon police closed four of its members allegedly involved in assaulting journalist Abdul Latif .
Tanvirul Islam, officer in charge of Thakurgaon Sadar police station, told this correspondent that four police members ASI Fazlay Rabbi to the district police lines in the afternoon.
