Over two hundred landless people of Jhaudia municipality went out on demonstrations in front of Sailakupa Upazila Parisad in Jhenaidah on Wednesday demanding relief materials amid a prolonged shutdown aimed to contain spread of coronavirus.
The landless people held a sit-in in front of the Upazila Parisad to press home their demand around 10:00am.
The agitators said that they became jobless for the prolonged shutdown over the coronavirus outbreak and were forced to take to the streets as no representative from the municipality had given them relief.
Mahidul Islam, a resident of Jhaudia Housing, said that they did not receive any government relief so far and no public representatives of the municipality went to help them.
The people are starving, he added.
The protesters withdrew their demonstration after on assurance of relief from the municipality mayor.
Mayor Kazi Ashraful Azam said that they distributed seven tonnes of rice among the people.
He said that the allocation of relief materials was less than the requirement. ‘That is why we could not reach the relief to every home,’ Azam said.
