Over 200 landless people of Jhaudia municipality area staged demonstration in front of Shailakupa Upazila Parisad on Wednesday demanding relief during the nationwide shutdown to contain novel coronavirus outbreak.

They observed a sit-in programme and staged demonstration there to press home their demand at around 10:00am.

The agitators said that they had become jobless due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak and were forced to take to the streets as no municipal representative had given them relief.

Mahidul Islam, a resident of Jhaudia Housing, said that they did not receive any government relief so far and no public representatives of the municipality went to help them during the crisis.

‘We are passing days in hunger,’ he said.

The protesters, at one stage, withdrew their demonstration after getting assurance of relief from the municipality mayor.

Municipality mayor Kazi Ashraful Azam claimed that they distributed a total of seven tonnes of rice among the people.

He also claimed that the allocations were lesser than the demand. So he failed to serve the relief at every house.
