A mob in Sirajganj torched a boat, allegedly in the presence of police, for carrying ‘COVID-19 suspects’ at Bashghat near the BL Govt School adjacent to the embankment of the River Jamuna on Thursday.

The boatman Jewel Mia, however, said that he was carrying labourers of a government project from Jamalpur’s Tarakandi on Thursday evening in the presence of police constable Hasan Ahmed.

‘The engine and a part of the boat are burnt. They beat me up and snatched my mobile phone when I protested at the act,’ he said.

Later, locals doused the fire.

Hafizul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sirajganj sadar police, said that he had heard of the incident but none filed any complaint with the police station.
