Women leader Rakhi Das Purkayastha dies

Freedom fighter and Bangladesh Mahila Parishad joint general secretary Rakhi Das Purkayastha died of liver cirrhosis Monday evening while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Guwahati, capital of Indian state of Assam. She was 68.

Rakhi, also a lawyer, left her husband Pankaj Bhattacharya, who is a veteran politician and Oikya NAP president, to mourn her death, a BMP press release said.

She played an active role in different democratic and progressive movements in the country, it said.

Communist Party of Bangladesh and Samajtantrik Mahila Forum in separate statements expressed their shock at the death of the women’s movement leader.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that prime minister Sheikh Hasina and road transport and bridges minister and Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, in separate messages prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
