Youth held, Imams fined for spreading corona rumour

A young man was arrested in Dhaka and six people, including two imams, were fined in Barishal for spreading rumour over coronavirus.

A press release issued by the police headquarters said that police arrested Md Naimur Rahman, 19, from capital’s Jatrabari for hacking one of his friend’s facebook ID and spreading rumour over coronavirus using it.

Naimur told police that, because of enmity with his friend, he hacked his friend’s ID and posted on March 29 that 27 people died of coronavirus infection in Shanir Akhra and Signboard areas.

New Age correspondent in Barishal reported that six people, including imams of two mosques, were fined Tk 25,000 each in Gaurnadi upazila for spreading rumor using loudspeaker of mosques and through social media.

Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Gaurnadi Police Station, said police detained the six from different areas of the upazila in drives between 11:00 pm on Tuesday and 3:00am on Wednesday.

The fined persons were Sirajul Islam, 54, retired sergeant of armed forces and a resident of Bijoypur village, Hasan Al Mamun, 33, imam of north Bijoypur Mosque, Abdul Kader Molla, 22, imam of Baniajuri Mosque, Rafiqul Islam, 35, assistant teacher of Gaurnadi Government Model Primary school, Salma Akther, 55, teacher of Barthi School and College and Dipali Debnath, 55, retired teacher of Gaurnadi Government Primary School, said Gournadi UNO Ishrat Jahan.
