International Trade Union Confederation-Bangladesh Council on Wednesday urged the government to stand beside the low-income and informal sector workers and ensure safety for the emergency service providing workers.
ITUC’s Bangladesh Council chairman Fazlul Haque Montu and secretary general Mojibur Rahman Bhuiyan in a statement said that although the government had taken necessary measures for some formal sector workers, but it needed to address the vulnerability and helplessness of informal and low-income workers.
They said that the government had announced five thousand crore taka subsides for RMG sector to pay wages of the workers, but the highest number of workers under informal sector needed to bring under such coverage.
They also urged the government to ensure safety for casual workers in hospitals, ambulances, laboratories, transport workers, sanitation and municipality workers and other workers who were providing services during the coronavirus outbreak.
They proposed that support should be provided to construction workers, domestic workers, porters, sales persons, small transport workers, day labourers, home-based workers and hawkers from the Workers' Welfare Foundation.
