Abdus Salam, organising secretary of Ishwardi municipal unit of Juba League, was arrested on Monday for spreading false and misleading video over coronavirus on Facebook on Sunday.

Sub-inspector (investigation) Atikul Islam of Ishwardi police station filed a case on Monday night under the Digital Security Act against Salam for spreading false information.

Earlier, Ishwardi police raided the house of Salam and arrested him on Monday.

The SI said that Salam posted a video containing false information on Facebook about the Russian citizens who were working at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. He warned that local people were in a vulnerable situation because of the Russians as the Russians were infected with coronavirus which triggered panic among the locals, the police officer added. Additional superintendent of police Goutam Kumar Biswas said that additional security measures had been taken at the nuclear power plant to avoid any untoward incident.

Confirming Salam’s identity, Alauddin Biplob, president of Ishwardi municipal unit Juba League, said, ‘We want appropriate punishment for the crime Salam has committed.’
