Around thousands of passengers got stuck on Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway due to heavy traffic movement on Wednesday, a day after the government closed all public transport services in Bangladesh.
A 30-km long tailback was created in Chandra area of Gazipur to Baoikhola under Basail upazila in Tangail on the highway.
Vehicular movement came to a halt in different spots on the highway from Chandra intersection in Gazipur to Tangail since Tuesday midnight.
Md Moniruzzaman, Gorai highway outpost police officer-in-charge, confirmed the matter and said, ‘Heavy pressure of homebound people due to government holidays and construction works of underpass in Kadhim Dholla under Mirzapur upazila have made the road one-way. These caused the tailback.’
Sobhan Hossain, a passenger on a pickup van, said, ‘Due to coronavirus situation we’ve got holidays. I’m going to my home in Rajshahi but didn’t get sit in bus. I’m with others got up in the pickup van in the early morning from Gabtoli bus stand in Dhaka.’
Kalam Miah, a lorry driver, said that he started his journey from Dhaka on Tuesday night for Bogra but the lorry got stuck at Gorai under Mirzapur upazila.
