The intern doctors at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Thursday observed work abstention for three hours demanding safety equipment amid the threat of coronavirus outbreak.

More than hundred intern doctors started the work abstention at 8:00am demanding safety equipment for them.

Iqbal Hasan, general secretary of Intern Physician Parishad, said that a number of patients with fever, cough and cold had come to the hospital for treatment and they were admitted to the hospital without any test.

Intern doctors were providing medical services to the patients without minimum safety measures and the authorities concerned did not take any effective measures to ensure the intern doctors safety, he added.

‘As a result, we went on work abstention,’ he said.

‘We have urged the hospital authorities to provide necessary equipment including gloves, masks, and clothes. But, the hospital authorities have said that they will talk to the health ministry in this regard first,’ he added.

‘We have gone for the strike for an instant solution to this problem as it is very hard to provide services to the patients with risks,’ he further added.

However, the intern doctors withdrew their work abstention programme after the hospital director’s assurance.
