The candidates began campaign after the allocation of symbols for Chittagong City Corporation elections, scheduled to be held on March 29.
The candidates said that they would be cautious about the protection against coronavirus during election campaign.
Chattogram zonal election officer Md Hasanuzzaman allocated symbols among the candidates at the district Shilpakala Academy premises on Monday morning.
Among the six mayoral candidates, Awami League candidate Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury got ‘boat’, Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Shahadat Hossain ‘paddy sheaf’, Bangladesh Islamic Front’s M A Matin ‘candle’, National Peoples Party’s Abul Manjur ‘Mango’, Islamic Font Bangladesh’s Wahed Murad ‘chair’, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Jannatul Islam ‘Handfan’.
Then the EC allocated symbols among the 217 councilor candidates.
BNP candidate Shahadat Hossain said that the party wants also to use social media for campaign because it is impossible to reach the doors of all voters within this short period.
‘We arranged mini trucks which would minimise close contact of people and also protect us from spreading virus.’
Returning officer Md Hasanuzzman said that a total of 161 councillor candidates and 56 women for reserved seats will participate in the polls.
Hasanuzzaman said that there would be 735 polling centres and 4, 886 booths in the election.
EC appointed about 16,000 officers for the election. Among them, 735 are presiding officers, 4,886 assistant presiding officers, and 9,772 polling officers.
He said that the votes would be cast with electronic voting machines for the first time in all 735 polling centres. A total 11,000 EVM would be used in this polls.
Training would be held in different phases for the officers from March 16 to 23 on the use of EVM.
After the training of the officers, mock voting would be held in all polling centres on March 27, he added.
Chattogram district senior election officer Munir Hosain Khan said that there are 19,51,052 voters in the CCC polls. Among them, 9,98,723 are male and 9,52,329 are female.
In this election, the number of voters increased 1,37,603 than the election of 2015.
On Monday afternoon, AL mayoral candidate Rezaul Karim started his election campaign after his special prayer at Shah Sufi Amanat Khan’s Mazar.
During the campaign, AL Chattogram Mohanagar vice-president Khorshed Alam Sujon and treasurer Abdus Salam were also present.
At the shrine, AL candidate met BNP mayoral candidate Shahadat Hossain who also started his election campaign from there.
During the election campaign, BNP standing committee members Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, organising secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, city BNP vice president Abu Sufian, general secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar were also present.
