Selectors on Thursday sprang a surprise by calling up uncapped left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed in Bangladesh’s 15-man squad for the two-match Twenty20 international series against Zimbabwe, scheduled next week.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim and all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin also returned to the squad as selectors left out batsmen Mohammad Mithun and Nazmul Hossain and pace bowler Rubel Hossian.
Mushfiq skipped Bangladesh’s previous Twenty20 series in Pakistan for safety concern while Saifuddin was out of action since July with back injury until he made a comeback with the ongoing series against Zimbabwe.
Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said they called 25-year old Nasum only as back-up option.
‘Nasum was always in our consideration since he did well in the last BPL. He was called now as we need a back up spinner really,’ said Minhajul.
Nasum, who is a common face in domestic circuit, claimed only six wickets in 13 matches in BPL playing for Chattogram Challengers.
Minhajul said they initially thought about picking Taijul Islam but later opted for Nasum.
‘We don’t have too many options now. Taijul was in our mind. But finally we opted for Nasum as we want to see him how he does in international level,’ he said.
The two Twenty20 matches of the series will be held in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium respectively on March 9 and 11.
Bangladesh defeated Zimbabwe by an innings and 106 runs in the one-off Test.
They are currently leading the three-match one-day international series 2-0 after winning the first two matches, respectively by 169 runs and four runs.
Bangladesh won seven of their 11 Twenty20 matches against Zimbabwe.
