Bottala to stage ‘Khona’ at RMC today

Theatre troupe Bottala will stage the 75th show of its acclaimed play ‘Khona’ at the on-going 4th Akshay Kumar Maitri Natya Utsab at Dr Kaisar Rahman Chowdhury Auditorium of Rajshahi Medical College today.

The play has been written by Samina Luthfa and directed by Mohammad Ali Haider.

‘Khona’ is based on the tragic story of ancient astrologer Lilabati and her struggles against patriarchy.

The myth and stories surrounding ‘Khona’ are well known in Bengali folklore. A body of ancient agricultural knowledge which includes weather predictions, popularly called Khona’s Sayings (Khonar Bachan), has been passed from generation to generation through a continuous oral tradition for more than 1,500 years.

The play shows how the astrologer Khona comes into clash with her powerful father-in-law Varaha after she gets recognition as a more capable astrologer than him.

A conflict ensues between them which escalate to an extreme level. In the end, her tongue is cut off making her Khona, one who cannot speak.

Samina Luthfa, Mohammad Ali Haider, Kazi Ruksana Ruma, Iva Reaz, Taufiq Hassan Bhuiya, Mizanur Rahman, Chandan Paul and others acted in the play.
